About Me:

Throughout my Art Practice, the human body and its anatomy have inspired me. This is due to my own experience of medical conditions and my relationship with my own body. With my work, I explore the relationship between medical conditions, mainly arthritis, and pain. Due to my own experience of pain, I’ve discovered restrictions that I’ve addressed with my artwork.

Various artists, such as Damien Hirst, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Tracey Emin, have inspired me to explore human anatomy and techniques. I use artist research to help me develop my initial idea, and then I explore poses and positions through photographs. These photographs allow me to explore my relationship between my body and my condition.

The pain and restrictions I experience, allow me to produce a large number of smaller drawings and paintings that I used to finalize my ideas. I combine photographs and drawings with anatomy. Before creating a small trail of my final idea, I research techniques that may be of use. While I have previously explored sculpture to address the themes I am interested in, I have recently started to use oil paints.

I have also begun combining embroidery into my layered oil paintings. Recent research has introduced me to the work of Jonathan Yeo, who produces half-finished oil paints addressing the lengths women go to for beauty. I have used this to aid my final piece. I combine the gridding method and techniques, for example, smudging and scraping paint, to produce a large scale imposing oil painting. I feel that this half finished style is a metaphor for my condition as I’m on a continuous journey with no definite end.
